What’s Happening
The House Republican Energy, Climate and Conservation Task Force, led by Rep. Garret Graves (R-LA), is unveiling a new plan to combat climate change and strengthen American energy security. The plan outlines six pillars, “Unlock America’s Resources,” “Beat China and Russia,” “Let America Build,” “Build Resilient Communities,” “American Innovation” and “Conservation with a Purpose” that will guide Republican climate policy, if they take back the House in November.
Why It Matters
In recent years, Republicans have returned to their conservation roots – from the Great American Outdoors Act led by two Republican Senators to the Growing Climate Solutions Act, which received more Republican votes than Democratic votes in the Senate. Amid jumbled and inconsistent energy policies from the Biden Administration, Republicans are offering an agenda that will lower energy prices while also addressing climate change. Ahead of the midterms in November, House Republicans are signaling to key voter demographics, including young people, women, and suburban voters, that climate action and the environment matter to them. Should House Republicans take the majority, it’s clear that climate action will be a part of their governing strategy.
My Take
Conservative principles and policies are the most effective in fighting climate change and providing affordable, abundant energy to all Americans. It’s very encouraging to see Republicans in the House of Representatives not only recognize this, but put it into action.
Young Americans, including young Republicans, want Congress to take meaningful action on climate change. An ACC poll earlier this year clearly shows that climate leadership is up for grabs among young people. House Republicans are demonstrating that they’re willing to step up to the plate in a serious way.
Quote Me On It
“Young Americans have heard Democratic leaders talk about climate change for years. Now, with this common-sense plan, Republicans are prepared to go one step further and take action. Investing in clean technologies like small modular nuclear energy, cutting innovation-killing red tape, and conserving natural ecosystems will protect our climate and strengthen our economy.” – ACC Action President Benji Backer
